Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO)

Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a solvent with wide ranging applications in biological research. Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) can be used as solvent for acetylene, sulfur dioxide and other gases, as an anti-freeze or hydraulic fluid when mixed with water, as a paint or varnish remover and as a solvent for Orlon and other synthetic fibres. Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is also used for polymerization and cyanide reactions and in industrial cleaners, pesticides, medicine (anti-inflammatory), veterinary medicine and pharmaceuticals. Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) (1-10%) has been shown to accelerate strand renaturation and is believed to give the nucleic acid thermal stability against depurination. As a PCR cosolvent, Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) may help improve yields, especially in long PCR.
