外泌体是细胞经过"内吞-融合-外排"等一系列调控过程而形成的细胞外纳米级（直径为30-100nm）小囊泡。外泌体可以携带蛋白，运送RNA，在细胞间物质和信息转导中起重要作用。外泌体可能通过调控免疫功能，促进肿瘤血管新生和肿瘤转移，以及直接作用于肿瘤细胞等途径，影响肿瘤的进展。外泌体由细胞分泌释放出来，在血液等体液内传播，最后又可被其他细胞吞噬，是细胞间通讯的重要介质。
外泌体目前被视为特异性分泌的膜泡，参与细胞间通讯，对外泌体的研究兴趣日益增长，从外泌体研究方向而言，干细胞、免疫、microRNA、靶向给药等都是热门研究领域，2013年诺贝尔生物/医学奖授予三位在细胞囊泡方面贡献突出的科学家，使外泌体的研究达到全新的高度，外泌体将在癌症的诊断及治疗等领域发挥重要作用。
